Herbert VanVleet

Herbert David VanVleet, 87, of Cowling, Illinois, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025, with his son C.W. by his side. Known to his family as "Superb Herb", he was born on Monday, June 6, 1938, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, the son of Michael Marion and Lillian Merle (Fitzgerell) VanVleet. Herb attended Mt. Carmel High School. He married Ida Mae Nix on September 24, 1977, and together they shared 44 years of marriage before her passing on October 16, 2021.

In his younger years, Herb used to roller skate, race cars, shoot pool and bowl. He also loved to play cards. But to those who knew him well, knew how he loved spending time with his family and friends the most. He loved to sit around the fire and drink beer with those closest to him. Herb also enjoyed spending time at the river. He had a deep bond with his beloved dog, Jo Jo, who was a wonderful companion. Herb was a member of the Free Masons and worked Snap-On Tools. He went on to sell insurance and finally selling cars. Herb was a fantastic salesman.

Herb is survived by his children, Cathy (Darren) Cole, Mark VanVleet and Carl "C.W." (Jennifer) VanVleet; grandchildren, John, Danny, Jeremy, Brent, Sasha, Mark Jr., Tori and Zane; great-grandchildren, James, Mason, Tristin, Taylor, Davin, Elijah, Rian, Adleigh, Waylon, John Ryder, Mila, Winston and Lux; great-great grandchildren, Rosie and Cody; and a very loved dog, Jo Jo.

In addition to his wife, Ida Mae VanVleet, Herb is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Herbert David "Skip" VanVleet Jr; a daughter, Pamela June Warren; siblings, Cecil Harriet VanVleet, Margaret "Maggie" VanVleet and Charles Marion VanVleet.

A private graveside service, celebrating Herb's life will be held at Stokes Chapel Cemetery in Crossville, Illinois. Roberts and Cook Funeral Service has been entrusted with arrangements.
